This is how it happens to many people, not just John!
Based on True Events
As you tag along with me, let me tell you John's story...
John* is a 45-year-old man who lives in Charlottetown, PEI. He has worked as a dishwasher at a local restaurant for five years, earning minimum wage. He has been renting a one-bedroom apartment in a rundown building for $800 a month, which takes up most of his income.
However, one day, he got renovicted. John cannot afford the new rent or find another place to live, as the vacancy rate is below 1% and the rents are too high. He decides to stay in a shelter but doesn’t feel safe there. He is exposed to a challenging environment, where he has to deal with other people's addictions, substance use, and mental health issues.
As a consequence, John’s health and well-being deteriorate. He becomes malnourished, cold, and sick. He starts drinking to cope with his stress and despair. He misses work and gets fired. He falls behind on his rent and gets evicted. He ends up on drugs, social assistance for income, and feels hopeless. He is one of the many victims of the rent control laws that affect low-income tenants with the harsh realities of every housing market that has rent control laws.
We want to help people like John, but we cannot do this alone. We need your support. We need your partnership. By making a small monthly donation, you can make a big difference in someone’s life. There are also other ways you can help, such as offering couch surfing, cooking, or volunteering. When you are ready, please contact us, and we will be happy to connect you with the right opportunities. Together, we can make our community great again. Together, we can show God’s love to the least of these. Together, we can change the world.
